These instruments allow more direct treatment of the soft tissues involved with movement. IASTM refers to a technique that uses instruments in a quick, rhythmic gliding or "scraping" motion applied to the skin over soft tissue dysfunction to remove scar tissues from injured soft tissues. This breaks up scar tissue and adhesions, allowing the muscles and fascia to be separated. Separating the muscles and fascia allows them to lengthen and facilitate a faster and more efficient healing process through formation of new extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen.
